Ferdinand Magellan

Born in 1480 in Portugal. He gained Spanish nationality, and took a journey to find a western route to the Spice Islands (or Indonesia). Because of his voyage, he became the first person to go on an expedition across the Atlantic Ocean and was the first person to circumnavigate the entire Earth. He also became the first individual to cross all Meridians of the earth. He discovered the Strait of Magellan, located in Southern South America, and also discovered the Philippines, which had not been known to exist by the Europeans.
